For those of you who haven’t heard, Spotify is a great application kicking up a storm in the music world by providing ad-funded music streaming for free. Recently they have released an iPhone application for their premium users (£9.99 a month) which I personally believe kicks iTunes ass. I’d never dream of purchasing another iTunes MP3, although I’m still happy to buy a real album if it’s one of my favourite artists.

After recent polls show that 70% of teenagers don’t feel guilty for downloading illegal tunes is Spotify the answer to cut the music industry killing trend? We’ve all had that niggling feeling at the back of our heads; is their model sustainable? I’m a premium user, and I love the product, it’s connected to my airport at home for multi-room streaming, I use it in the office, and have my iPhone connected to my in-car sound system.

In a post on Spotify’s official blog prompted by Spotify’s first year birthday, Daniel Ek the founder of Spotify recently shared his thoughts about where his company stands today and where he hopes it can go in the future.

According to Ek “The notion of overnight success is very misleading and actually rather harmful to any hope for long term and sustainable growth in this industry. Yet this is unfortunately something the music industry as a whole is particularly good at, expecting business models to be proven within months of inception.”

He urges the music industry to “think outside of the box and realise that the new business model in music is a mix between ad-supported music, downloads, subscriptions, merchandising and ticketing where the user comes first and where the key to monetisation comes from portability and packaging access rights.”

It’s clear that the music industry which influences so many ages fails to embrace change. Ek reminds us that iTunes wasn’t taken seriously but is now the forefront of music sales. In recent statistics, digital downloads account for 90% of single sales.

Ek finishes on a high note “We aren’t interested in just trying to hype the company and then flipping it,” and confidently- “We are in this for the long haul.”

I’d like to see ISPs introducing a music addon package which includes unlimited music streaming for the home.

In recent news Lily Allen has joined an anti-piracy lobby in a war against illegal downloading, with claims that it is helping to bankrupt the music industry. (Even though it seems here, she has been pointed out to be clueless about the rules surrounding copyright.)

This is a great tune and way of delivering the message. Maybe with services like Spotify illegal downloading and sharing will be a thing of the past. I see ISP’s like BT offering a ‘Total Music Package’ where services like Spotify will be bundled in for the same price as your broadband connection.

The superstar artist is Dan Bull, he sings the song to the tune of her own song, “22?.
